  • 75' mahagony deck with western exposure

  • 800 feet overlooking the Contoocook River

  • House not visible from the road

  • No neighbors in sight

  • Landscape perennials and trees: Japanese Red Maples, Corkscrew Willow, Buckthorn Fine Lines, Sky Pencil Hollys, Forsythia, Peonies, Hastas, Red & Orange Tiger Lillies, Irises, Arbor Vitaes, and a Pear tree to name a few.

The lower garden (closest to the kitchen and grill), produces reliable herbs, brassicas, and tomatoes most recently, while the larger upper garden produced vegetables, beans and annual flowers for the past four growing seasons.

There’s a cleared path located at the upper end of the property that’s convenient for hauling in good-ole manure.

We installed all of the landscaping and hard-scaped blue slate walkways and rock walls ourselves. Aesthetically, we’ve designed the spaces and beds with the inspiration of Japanese gardens in mind. (They get decent snow there too.)

the river

The house faces west (hello sunsets) on 800 feet of the Contoocook River, or “the Tooky ” as locals refer to it.

Fish, fly fish, take on white water Class III to Class V rapids, if you’re into the kayaking scene. All in, the Contoocook is a winding 71 miles, and boasts some of the best salmon, trout and bass for both recreational and sport fisher types in the region.

Open the windows anywhere in the house and the sound of the river is there. At night, it lulls you to sleep.

“The Only Henniker on Earth” is a small scenic town of 4,800 (2011 Town Hall census) 2,019 according to nerdwallet.com, in the heart of New England. Since late 18th century, it’s offered a rich community amid a bucolic setting, complete with our own Memorial Day Parade—where men wear Fez hats, play large percussive instruments and march along side kids’ town ball teams. This is Americana at its best.

Henniker has four seasons, unless you count mud season, then five. Pat’s Peak (five minutes away from our back door) draws New Englanders for its legendary ski school during winter. Spring brings wild lilacs and farm store chicks. Summer on the Contoocook River means fishing, kayaking Class III-V rapids, and hiking verdant backwoods trails—snowmobiles and ATVs take to them in winter. Kids learn to love sugar shacks, apple orchards and blueberry picking in Henniker where an ordinary day can rival the best episodes of Little House on the Prairie.

Regardless of how many there are (we couldn’t find another single Henniker on the map), this one can be a pretty magical place.
